20 suspected rioters in Katete were granted bail

All 20 of Katete’s Kamwaza village people who are accused of attacking police personnel have been granted bail by the Chipata High Court.

The 20 are accused of engaging in riotous behavior, willful destruction of property, and other offenses after allegedly assaulting police officers and setting a police car on fire in November of last year.

Each of the defendants was granted bail by Chipata Resident Judge MERCY MAKUBALO on their own recognizance with two sureties of fixed aboard determined by either a headman or chief.

In November, Katete Magistrate MARY MUSONGOLE refused the accused’s request for bail due to the ongoing unrest in the neighborhood.

Four of the 20 accused individuals are minors.

The supposed release of murder suspects by the police sparked the chaos.

When the police arrived in the neighborhood to restore order, they were attacked.
