After being abandoned, a three-year-old daughter drowns in a plastic drum.

In Lusaka’s Garden township, a three-year-old daughter drowned after being left unsupervised in a 110-liter plastic water drum.

The victim’s grandma reported the incident to authorities, according to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, and officers have since logged a complaint of suspected drowning.

According to Mr. Hamoonga, Tenjiwe Banda, age 3, drowned in the aforementioned plastic drum yesterday morning at 6:00. Tenjiwe Smart’s grandmother, Shelly Smart, 54, a Zimbabwean native, reported the incident.

“Brief facts surrounding the matter are that the reporter woke up the deceased around 05:00 hours to prepare her for school. While she went to sweep outside the house, she left the child inside the house, together with her daughter Cythia Banda who is the mother to the deceased. They searched the house for the deceased and discovered her in the plastic container with water,” he said.

According to Mr. Hamoonga, police arrived at the scene and examined the body, which they found to be in good condition.

“A wooden stool was found beside the drum which the deceased used to draw water from the drum. The deceased’s body has since been deposited at University Teaching Hospital awaiting post-mortem. Police have opened an Inquiry file,” he said.
