It has been a long journey for Afro Beats, it’s just amazing reflecting from where it came from to where it is today. Burna Boy is definitely on the forefront of this movement. From being the young chap with a dino cut who “like to party” to being the dreadlocked “African Giant”, consistency is definitely key for his success.
Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, Burna Boy, a Nigerian Afro-fusion singer and songwriter rose to prominence in 2012 after releasing the lead single “Like to Party” from his debut studio album, L.I.F.E. Burna Boy’s music draws heavily from musical legends Fela Kuti and Bob Marley. In a recent interview, he mentioned Fela Kuti was his Super Hero. It is also interesting to note that his grandfather was the manager of Fela Kuti. Hit by hit, Burna Boy managed to steal hearts on the continent and now he has taken the world stage. Retracing his steps, this “African Giant” made noise back home in Nigeria with tracks like “tonight” and several collabos.
The next time we heard the guy was now in South Africa bringing the heat with AKA collabos, am sure Burna boy became a household name in South Africa as you heard people sing along to his “All eyes on me” hook. “All eyes on me” and “Baddest” collabos went on to scoop awards in South Africa. He also released a hit called “Pree Me” this period. This “African Giant” is always on the move, the next thing he was making waves in London working with other talented artists like J Hus. We can not shy away from the fact that through this journey Burna Boy was trying to find his own voice as the musical styles varied over the years until he finally nailed it.
What sets Burna Boy apart from the others is his African authenticity, you can sense that in his style and sound. He has embraced his Africanness and had the perfect title for what the international stage may view as his debut album “African Giant”. The day one fans know he didn’t get to this stage overnight or by luck, its hard work, and consistency. The African Giant also made sure he had the right Queen by his side and hooked up with the musically and physically gifted Stefflon Don.
The African Giant album is by far the most ambitious project to come out of Africa in this generation. Congrats Burna Boy
