National Champion Andrew Kayonde has pulled out of the top 6 Chess competition after accusing fellow players of match fixing. Kayonde says some players deliberately lost their games against Mwali so that he should not qualify.

Players Chitumbo Mwali and Richmond Phiri have disputed claims of match fixing.
Kayonde’s decision to withdraw has automatically seen international master Chitumbi Mwali qualify for the world championship by default.

Mwali says he is disappointed that he will not play the last round with Kayonde as it would have been a good preparation for the world Championship. He is however happy to be Zambia’s representative at the world Championship in Russia.

And Chess Federation of Zambia Vice President Lesley Chikuse says Kayonde’s decision is a sign of frustration.
