Edith Nawakwi donates mealie meal to 3 churches

Must read

FDD leader Edith Nawakwi has started providing aid to religious organisations in the Capital City to lessen the funeral burden caused by increasing deaths due to COVID-19.
Ms Nawakwi has today donated 150 bags of 25kg meali meal worth K18, 000 to the United Church of Zambia, Anglican Church and the Methodist church.

The opposition leader noted that the UCZ church in the mentioned area has even formulated a committee to look into funeral matters as the church has to convene almost on a daily basis to manage funerals.

Ms Nawakwi disclosed that the said church holds funeral processions too often.
She said increase in the number of funeral is making it difficult for members of the community to help each other.

“Whenever we go to mobilize, what is hitting us first is the complaints from people that there are so many funerals that it is becoming extremely difficult for people to support each other in the communities,” she said.

“At this particular congregation, this is Matero UCZ, we even has a funeral committee and literally when I ask them how they are managing they are saying it is extremely difficulty because on a daily basis, or maybe two….three days we have to come and convene and start asking the same members to contribute for the coffin, for the food, so I thought I could contribute a little bit of meali meal for them because usually that is one of the major at funerals.”

Prior to today’s contribution, Ms Nawakwi first learnt of the challenges which the religious organisations face in handling the said matter from Lusaka’s Chibolya Mosque after which she spread the aid to Chazanga and many other places within the City.
“People appreciate because the management of funerals is mostly centred around religious organisations,” she said when she addressed a few people from the three mentioned churches.

The opposition leader however implored members of the public to continue adhering to the stipulated health guidelines aimed at mitigating the spread of the pandemic.
