Flood victims relocation begins

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- has started relocating families of Kuku Compound whose houses have been submerged following the continued heavy rains in Lusaka.

And DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe who visited the families assured them of government support throughout their stay at the camp.

Mr. Kabwe said it is the desire of government to see every Zambian safe and free from all forms of disasters.

The DMMU National Coordinator said President Edgar Lungu wants every Zambian regardless of their locality to be safe from all forms of calamities.

He said the President wants the people of Kuku compound around the Ngwenya and Blue water dams to be relocated to safer areas as the government seeks solutions to the flooding situation around the area.

Mr. Kabwe however expressed displeasure on the continued indiscriminate disposal of waste by residents.

He said it will be difficult to address the prevailing challenges if people are not taking responsibility.

Mr. Kabwe called on the residents to take responsibility and maintain the drainages in order to avoid flooding.

He further assured the people of Kuku, Chawama, Kanyama and Makeni areas that the issue of floods will soon come to an end once the construction of the main drainage system is completed in the coming few weeks.

And residents of Kuku have praised government for coming to their aid.

Phoebe Salikosi, a resident of Kuku compound expressed gratitude that government was working on a lasting solution to the floods in the area.
