Zambian defender Kabaso Chongo has suffered head injuries after being hit by a projectile by unruly Congolese fans during a league match. Chongo, who was among TP Mazembe players, staff and delegation that needed the intervention of police to escape a mob, walked out of the pitch with injuries.
Sanga Balende fans attacked the TP Mazembe delegation after a Vodacom Ligue 1 match at the Stade Kashala Bonzola in Mbuji-Mayi in central DR Congo.
Mazembe beat Balende 1-0 after Tanzanian striker Thomas Ulimwengu scored deep in regulation time to frustrate the local fans who reacted angrily and pounced on the visitors.
Chongo, who was in the starting lineup, had a cut on the left side of his head with teammates Phillipe Kinzumbi and Issac Tshibungu also hurt in the attack. Mazembe had to flee the violent environment at the stadium in a truck provided by the police and have since boarded their flight back to Lubumbashi.
