Konkola Copper Mines -KCM- has released 3.8 million United States Dollars to be paid to mine suppliers and Contractors by tomorrow, Friday April 16th, 2021
This follows protests by employees of mine contractors in Chingola who are demanding for a specific payment date.
The employees were also demanding for improved conditions of service among others.
KCM Chief Executive Officer Christopher Sherphard said the mining giant is up to date with payments to contractors as of March 31st, 2021.
Mr. Sherphard also dismissed allegations by some contractors suggesting that there is segregation in the payments of contracts in favour of foreign suppliers and Contractors.
And Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe has warned external
forces influencing employees of some contracting companies at KCM to protest and cause industrial unrest that government will not tolerate such behavior.
Mr. Nundwe said it is unacceptable to have commotions on the Copperbelt a few months before the general election.
He was speaking in Chingola this morning when he met Directors of Mine Suppliers and Contractors for KCM in Chingola.
Earlier, Nchanga Member of Parliament Chali Chilombo said the events of the past 4 days in Chingola have not been received well.
