Local govt service commission fires 15 employees

Amos Musonda

Local Government Service Commission has dismissed 15 employees from various local authorities.

The employees have been dismissed for among other reasons misappropriation of funds, theft and absenteeism.

The dismissals were effected following the Local Government Commission’s sitting of Monday, January 4, 2021 in Lusaka.

Commission Chairperson Amos Musonda says the dismissal of the employees was necessary to ensuring effective and efficient functioning of local authorities.

Mr. Musonda says the dismissals took place at 10 local authorities.

He also raised concern on the incidences of financial irregularities in some local authorities which he noted has negatively impacted on service delivery.

Mr. Musonda has since urged appropriate committees of councils to be proactive and take keen interest in prudent financial management of local authorities.

He also called on the Ministry of Local Government to enhance its oversight roles by regularly monitoring and evaluating the performance of councils.

Mr. Musonda further warned that the commission would not tolerate any form of indiscipline which may bring the local government service in disrepute.

This is contained in a statement issued to ZNBC News through Commission Secretary Lazarus Mulenda.
