Lusaka taxi drivers warn of another hike in fares

Some taxi drivers in Lusaka have warned that the ten percent increase in road and insurance tax on vehicles that came into effect on January 1, 2022, may result in an additional hike on transport fares.

A taxi driver Chola Machina who operates from Northmed market has told diamond news that customers may have to brace themselves for another hike if taxi business is to make sense.

He says as much as the new administration is promising to turn around things in few a years, the recent increases will trigger the cost of conducting business especially since the fuel pump price also went up.

But another taxi operator from the Waterworks area says the increase will allow the collection of funds to help Government implement free education and provide Bursaries.

He is of the view that if the government sticks to the intended outcomes, Zambians will be relieved of many challenges that require the same resource envelope.

Last year, the government announced plans of effecting a ten percent increase on-road and insurance tax of vehicles.
