Maiko Zulu: Hh Keeps What He Promises

The repeal of the defamation of the President statute, according to musician and free speech advocate MAIKO ZULU, has demonstrated that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA is true to his campaign promises.

According to Mr. ZULU, Zambia has become a leader in the promotion of democracy and human rights on the continent as a result of the decision to repeal the Defamation of the President statute.

In an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka, he said that removing the law will provide the nation a good chance to enjoy free speech.

However, he has urged Zambians to refrain from using derogatory or harsh language when discussing politics or other affairs of state.

Additionally, MUNDIA HAKOOLA, executive director of the Continental Leadership Research Institute, called the repeal of the criminal defamation of the President statute a step forward for democracy.

Defamation of the President, according to Mr. HAKOOLA, was one of the laws being employed to repress the populace.

However, he warns that political figures shouldn’t take advantage of the law’s repeal to start calling the President derogatory names.

In an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka, Mr. HAKOOLA added that the death penalty’s repeal is another positive step that would uphold the value of human life.
