Home Affair’s minister Steven Kampyongo has warned immigration officers against corruption saying stiff action will be taken against anyone found wanting.
Mr. Kampyongo has urged the officers to practice maximum discipline and avoid corrupt practices but be professional when it comes to the issuance of permits.
Mr. Kampyongo sounded the warning when he commissioned 20 houses for Immigration officers working at Kasumbalesa boarder post in Chililabombwe district on the Copperbelt.
Mr. Kampyongo said government appreciates the role that the immigration department plays in issuing of permits to investors and visitors that it cannot be over emphasied.
He said this is the reason government is working tirelessly to provide decent accommodation to immigration officers like their counterparts in the police service.
The Home Affairs Minister added that he is aware of the challenges the immigration department is faced with, among them transport and accommodation.
Mr. Kampyongo said it is in this perspective that the ministry of Home Affairs has embarked on an ambitious programme of constructing over 12 thousand housing units for the security wings in the ministry.
Mr. Kampyongo stated that so far two thousand three hundred housing units have been completed under the first phase of the project.
And Deputy Director General of Immigration, Whitsone Chavula said the construction of the houses is a morale booster to the officers.
Mr. Chavula added that officers have had accommodation challenges for a long time as they used to commute from Chililabombwe to Kasumbalesa due to the housing deficit.
Meanwhile, Copperbelt Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe said government has gone off its boundaries to ensure that men and women in uniform have decent accommodation.
And Chililabombwe Member of Parliament, Richard Musukwa who is also Mines minister has thanked government for bringing such development in the district.
