Both the north and southbound carriageways of the N2 are closed between Hilton and Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal. More than 20 vehicles have been involved in a pile-up.
Emergency services are on the scene.
It is believed that both carriageways are being evacuated after white smoke was seen coming from a damaged tanker.
Motorists are being advised to take alternative routes.
