As Malawi’s sixth President Dr Lazarus Chakwera was being sworn-in in Lilongwe yesterday, defeated President Professor Peter Mutharika was hurriedly packing his belongings from Sanjika Palace in Blantyre after which he made his way to Mangochi, to his retirement home.
According to Malawian media, Mutharika is moving a to private sprawling Mangochi residence.
Mutharika, 80, is said to have built a sprawling mansion in Mangochi where he will endure his forced retirement from politics.
CAPTION: Trucks ferrying “personal effects”of former Malawi President Peter Mutharika arrive at his retirement home.
While Mutharika gave his last address on Friday where he cried that the election was not free and fair, Zodiak TV carried his briefing live while his “beloved” MBC TV was showing outdated music videos.
That was dramatic turnaround by the Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC).
As President of Malawi, Mutharika enjoyed massive coverage on MBC at the exclusion of the opposition and those critical of his rule.
But after his defeat Mutharika had been blacked out.
Mutharika will probably now have to rely on the private media to carry and broadcast his stories. Eish!!
