Neelkanth workers protest for pay rise

Over one thousand unionized workers at Neelkanth Lime Limited in Ndola on the Copperbelt have staged a protest demanding a salary increment and immediate removal of Union representatives.

A ZNBC News crew which rushed to the mine found workers chanting slogans while carrying placards demanding to be addressed by Management at the lime company.

Officers from Zambia Police Service were also found at the scene monitoring the situation.

And speaking in an interview with ZNBC News, JONATHAN KALUBA one of the agitated workers said it is unfair that Neelkanth lime is paying them as low as one thousand kwacha per month.

Mr. KALUBA also described the working conditions at the mine as poor while CYNTHIA MUKUWE appealed to the UPND Administration to immediately intervene.

Meanwhile Copperbelt Assistant Labor Commissioner CHARLES MUWOWO who was at Neelkanth lime described the protests as unfortunate and called on management to immediately address the plight of the workers.

Mr. MUWOWO told ZNBC news that workers have the right to protest but should follow the laid down procedure.

But Neelkanth lime Human resource Manager EMMANUEL KATONGO who confirmed the illegal protest said Management and the Union are already addressing issues raised by the workers and urged them to resume work.
