Residents of Barotseland have been left shell-shocked after word emerged that newly-appointed Western Province deputy permanent secretary, Henry Imbuwa Mwalye has been fired barely a month in office.

Cabinet Office sources have told BT that Mwalye was dismissed after a snap audit established that he had fraudulently signed for huge a allocation of public funds to his advantage.

“He has not just been suspended but it is a dismissal. It has something to do with some huge amount of money he signed for contrary to public financial regulations,” the sources who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter said. “Auditors were sent to Mongu and they are the ones who established that anomaly. Even officers from the Anti-Money Laundering Unit of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) were also part of the investigative team.”

The sources said they were not sure if an arrest would follow in the wake of Mwalye’s dismissal.

“When provincial minister, Hon. Kapelwa Mbangweta was asked if he knew anything about the money for which Mwalye has been fired, he said he was not aware of anything,” said another source.
