HE Ministry of Health (MOH) says that 35,000 males have undergone Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) in Eastern Province in 2018.
This compared 39,189 males circumcised last year.
Eastern Province Provincial Health Director (PHD) Kennedy Kabuswe who disclosed the development in an interview today commended the traditional leadership for playing a leading role in promoting the VMMC through the community health in their respective chiefdoms.
Dr Kabuswe says circumcision in men will make up a 60 percent contribution in the reduction of the HIV prevalence and cervical cancer cases in women in Eastern Province.
He revealed that his office has set up VMMC programmes aimed at targeting 9,568 adolescents in the province.
Through the August Male Circumcision Campaign, about 12,959 adolescents have undergone VMMC.
