Patrick Phungwayo is reportedly in financial trouble

Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana Patrick Phungwayo is reportedly in financial trouble and may have his car repossessed.  The former defender was slapped with court papers and dragged to the South Gauteng High Court by FirstRand Bank Limited over an unpaid amount of R307 652, 28 on his car. The publication reports that the court papers, dated 28 February 2023, read: “Interest thereon at the rate of 18.75 percent nominal per annum calculated daily and compounded monthly with effect from 11 July 2022 to date of payment, both days inclusive.”

A source told the outlet that Phungwayo did not recover financially after a rough patch because no club has signed him since 2019. After leaving Pirates in 2017, he joined Free State Stars in the same year and played for the club for two years. Another source said that Phungwayo is working hard not to lose his car.

“We told him that instead of avoiding their calls he must just arrange payments with them, no bank wants to take your car unless you run away from there,” the source was quoted as saying.

In November 2021, Phungwayo was apprehended by the police for allegedly having been involved in robberies and theft in Johannesburg.

According to Sport Briefly, the 35-year-old was in possession of stolen goods. He was also reportedly involved in the car hijacking of an Audi vehicle that was stolen in Bramley and a Kia vehicle stolen in Linden.

In the same month, KickOff reported that Phungwayo was granted R5 000 bail after appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. At the time, close friend Joe Seanego told the publication that the Alexandra-born player’s charges were moved from stage five to stage one.
