Police detain a Zimbabwean driver after failing to support his claim of copper theft

A Zimbabwean truck driver who reported gun-wielding criminals taking his copper concentrate led to his arrest.

According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, 43-year-old Wadzana Mugore claimed being accosted by three men with pistols, who then seized the vehicle carrying copper concentrate.

“Police at Lusaka Central Police are investigating a case of Theft of Goods in Transit which was earlier reported on July 28,2022 around 20:00 hours as an aggravated robbery at Matero Police Station by Mugore aged 43 a Zimbabwean truck driver who was driving a Daf truck registration number GP JP 32 SR GP white in colour,” he said.

Police, according to Mr. Hamoonga, conducted a follow-up investigation and spoke with the driver, who was unable to corroborate his account.

Later, he claimed, a truck carrying black soil was discovered abandoned near the Ngwerere roundabout, and the copper concentrate was discovered in a yard approximately nine kilometres away.

“Police have since detained the driver and two guards who were at the yard where the copper concentrate was found,” he said.

The worth of the copper concentrate and the owner’s information, according to Mr. Hamoonga, have not yet been determined.
