President Lungu mourns Dr Joseph Chilengi

Government has announced, with deep regret, the death of His Excellency, Dr Joseph Chilengi, Zambia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey.

Dr. Chilengi passed away at Guven Hospital in Ankara, Turkey at 22:00 hours yesterday on Tuesday, 11th May, 2021 after an illness.

And President Edgar Lungu is saddened by the death of Zambia’s Ambassador to Turkey, Joseph Chilengi.

President Lungu has accorded the late Ambassador an Official Funeral in recognition of his numerous contributions to the country.

President Lungu has described him as an expert at fostering international relations and human rights with a keen interest in the welfare of refugees and internally displaced persons.

The President says he is mourning with the bereaved family of Dr Chilengi and has extended his sincere condolences on the sad loss.

Meanwhile, the funeral gathering for Ambassador Chilengi is being held at Flat Number 14, NAPSA Flats on Joe Kapilikisha Road in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill area.

Cabinet Office will release a detailed funeral programme once Government finalises all the arrangements in consultation with the bereaved family.

Government has however advised the general public that in line with observing the guidelines on Covid-19, attendance at the funeral remains restricted to only close family members and selected Senior Government Officials.

Ambassador Chilengi, 61 has served as Zambia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey from January 2018 when President Lungu appointed him.

During his tour of duty in Turkey, Dr. Chilengi used the opportunity to further strengthen the already existing cordial relations between Zambia and Turkey while exploring new areas of trade, industry, investment and cooperation.

The climax of his tour of duty was in July 2018 when he successfully facilitated the State Visit to Zambia by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey.

This is according to a press release issued by Secretary to The Cabinet, Dr. Simon Miti.
