POLICE have arrested and charged with tried murder a 29- time-old truck motorist believed to have nearly run over a police officer who was on duty along the Lumumba and Kafue road business lights.
This is after a videotape has gone viral on social media of a police officer holding on to a truck.
Police deputy prophet Danny Mwale says Smart Phiri is said to have defied the business rules and when the officer on duty tried to stop him, he nearly ran over him.
“ There was a road business incident which passed on June 7, 2022 at around 1400 hours at Lumumba/ Kafue road business lights in which our Traffic Officer while regulating business was nearly run over by a Hino Ranger truck enrollment number BAK 1346 driven by Smart Phiri aged 29 of Kamwala South area in Lusaka.
The incident happed when the said motorist defied business signals and drove on nearly hitting the Officer who, in trying to save his life, jumped on to the frontal bull bar and swung for some time while the Hino truck was still in stir, ” he said
Mr Mwale said the officer managed to throw himself off the moving vehicle and sustained some minor injuries.
“ He was rushed to Chawama Level 1 Sanitarium where he was attended to and latterly discharged. Smart Phiri didn’t stop the vehicle. Other drivers gave a chase and managed to seize him. Police have charged and arrested him for tried Murder negative to Section 215 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, ” he said.
He added that Phiri is detained in police guardianship staying for court appearance while his motor vehicle has been impounded.
