United Party for National Development (UPND) Mongu youth constituency chairman has been arrested for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
John Chiinga aged 37 of unknown house number in Helen Plots has also been slapped with Conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
In a statement, police deputy spokesperson, Danny Mwale said Chiinga was arrested after his faction allegedly attacked Patriotic Front (PF) cadres who were mounting campaign materials on Zesco electric poles on the Mongu-Lusaka road.
“Police also arrested Nyambe Imasiku aged 27 of unknown house number in Kapulanga Compound for Malicious Damage to property. Brief facts are that on June 3, 2021 around 15: 45 hours, Police received information that cadres from the United Party for National Development (UPND) led by Chiinga and Imasiku had attacked the Patriotic Front (PF) cadres who were mounting campaign materials on Zesco Electric poles along the Mongu-Lusaka road,” Mr Mwale said.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the cadres from the two political parties clashed after the UPND cadres pulled down and tore the PF Chitenge materials including campaign flags which were mounted on the electric poles.
Mr Mwale said police who rushed to the scene apprehended Imasiku and Chiinga who is said to be a UPND youth constituency chairman.
He said during apprehension, Chiinga resisted and in the process assaulted the Officer-In-Charge for Mongu Central Police Station identified as Edgar Nkowane aged 41.
He said Mr Nkowane sustained a painful right arm and leg.
“He was rushed to Lewanika General Hospital where he was attended to and later discharged. The suspects are currently detained in Police custody,” he said.
