The Zambia Air Force has evicted the Zambia Flying Doctors Service from the ZUZE AirForce base in Ndola. ZAF has given the ZFDS one year to ensure that they vacate the Air Force base.
And ZFDS says the institution has been operating without a board since June 2016.
ZFDS acting executive director Dr. Joseph Mulenga said the institution was not planned for in the construction of the new airport.
Dr. Mulenga revealed this when Health Minister Sylvia Masebo toured the institution in Ndola.
“In the recent past, ZFDS has faced various operational challenges which have resulted in lower than planned performance levels. In 2021, the service delivery was below 50 percent. The ZFDS act provides for the appointment of the board consisting of nine members by the minister of health. However, since June 2016, there has been no sitting board,” said Dr. Mulenga.
“Since November 2018, there has not been any formal appointment of the Director. This has negatively affected the smooth running of the institution. Furthermore, the matter was queried by the office of the Auditor General in 2020.”
He asked Masebo to also help the institution to clean the outstanding debt.
“ZFDS wishes to request for assistance from the ministry in liquidating the outstanding debt of K13,508,674.12.”
Dr. Mulenga also said the last time a minister of health visited ZFDS was in 2016 by then minister Dr. Joseph Kasonde.
But Masebo expressed disappointment with the Zambia Air Force for evicting ZFDS from Perter Zuze air force base following the take over of the airport.
She said she will confer with her counter part in the Defence Ministry and see how ZFDS can still be accommodated.
She said the government has not budgeted relocation of the facility to the new Simon mwansa kapwepwe airport.
