Al Shabab: US Airstrike in Somalia Kills 30 Militants

According to the US military, roughly 30 Islamist al-Shabab insurgents were killed during a US airstrike supporting government troops in Somalia.

The action took place close to the town of Galcad, which is located roughly 260 kilometers (162 miles) northeast of Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab terrorists and the Somali army have been engaged in combat for the town’s sovereignty over the previous few days.

According to the US Africa Command, the airstrike on Friday occurred when the army was under attack from more than 100 militants.

Seven soldiers were slain earlier by Islamists who stormed a Galcad military installation. According to the information ministry of Somalia, numerous insurgents were slain.

Since 2006, Al-Shabab has been waging war against Somalia’s central government in an effort to create an extreme Islamist government. It still attacks military and civilian targets despite being driven out of Mogadishu and other regions.

The port town of Harardhere, which had served as a vital al-Shabab supply hub since 2010, was reportedly taken by the government’s army and local militias last Monday, according to the administration.

Three al-Shabab vehicles were destroyed, according to the US Africa Command’s assessment on the combat in Galcad, and “the command assesses that no civilians were hurt or killed.” There is no independent verification of the information.

“US Africa Command’s forces will continue training, advising and equipping partner forces to help give them the tools they need to defeat al-Shabab, the largest and most deadly al-Qaeda network in the world,” the statement said.
