On Lake Mweru in the Nchelenge area of Luapula province, TWO people—among them a coxswain—have perished, while 12 others are still missing and presumed dead.
The dead were on a boat with 32 passengers that capsized in Lake Mweru yesterday between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m.
The deceased, a Coxswaine named John Kamobole, 45, of Nchelenge District, and Mutumbu Mwembo, between 6 and 12 months old, were found shortly after the event, according to police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale.
According to him, the passengers were traveling from Kilwa Island on the Zambian side to the Kashobwe region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“Police Preliminary investigations indicate that most of the passengers were Congolese nationals using a boat belonging to a Zambian. Further investigations have revealed that the accident happened due to strong waves on the Lake. The search and rescue operation for the missing persons is ongoing,” he said.
