One child was killed and 12 others are currently missing in a Boating tragedy on Lake Bangweulu when their boat capsized as they were their route to a church event.
41 Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) church members were traveling from Kashitu hamlet on Chilubi Island to Chishi Island in the Chifunabuli area.
A super engine driven boat carrying 41 Young Adventists capsized on Lake Bangweulu about 3 nautical miles from the destination, according to Bright Buunda, who reported the incident to the police.
On Friday, a few hours before the start of the Sabbath, the accident happened.
Of of the 41, 28 have been found alive, 12 are still missing, and 1 youngster has not survived after being proven dead when rescued, according to Northern Provincial Commanding Officer Gloria Mulele.
The surviving have been taken urgently to the neighborhood hospital for medical care.
“Brief facts are that on this material date at about 14:00 hours the said church members left the village to Chishi Island boarding the above named transport.Whilst on the lake strong waves and winds which engulfed the lake hammered into the boat and it capsized as the coxswain failed to to control the boat,”said Ms Mulele.
Those missing are between the ages of two and 28.
