27,000 accounts held in commercial banks received deposits of varied sums in US dollars as a result of a bug in a system utilized by the Central Bank of The Gambia.
The majority of individuals impacted were government employees making at least $100 (£83) each month. They had $18,000 (£16,000) deposited into their accounts.
The Central Bank has blocked the impacted accounts to enable a reversal of the deposited funds and has attributed the error to a malfunctioning data transfer system from commercial banks.
This incident took place a few weeks after unidentified hackers allegedly stole two terabytes of sensitive and important data from the central bank.
Authorities claim that there was no connection between the overpayments and hacking, though.
