A 37-year-old Chinese national has been given a three-year prison sentence including hard labor by the Chipata High Court for manslaughter.
On July 3rd of this year, WU ZHIGANG of Lusaka’s Makeni neighborhood shot Edward Manda of the Zumwanda neighborhood after discovering him gathering aqua stones from a Chinese-owned mine, Jin Wan mine in Lumezi district.
MANDA suffered a fractured thigh and passed away in the Chipata Central hospital two days later.
In an effort to lessen the severity of the punishment, defense attorney JOHN PHIRI of JMP Associates urged the court to be kind and impose a fine rather than a jail sentence.
Mr. PHIRI pleaded with the court to take the incident’s contributing factors into account.
However, Chipata Judge GETRUDE CHAWATAMA from Lusaka stated that the crime the defendant was charged with was grave.
Due to the convict’s bail, the judge CHAWATAMA declared that the punishment will begin to take effect today.
