A 22-year-old Zambian man was taken into custody by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) for trafficking more than 4.5 kg of heroin that was hidden inside soap tablets.
Hussein Khan, a DEC public relations representative, stated that the agency apprehended and charged Andrew Kalilo, who resides at 1050 Sugar Road in Matero.
According to Mr. Khan, Mr. Kalilo was detained for drug trafficking and drug importation in violation of sections 15 and 16 of the Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021 of the Laws of Zambia.
Mr. Khan said that Mr. Kalilo was detained at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport while traveling from Addis Ababa to Benin on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.
He claimed that after searching his suitcase, DEC agents found 4.708 kg of heroin that had been stowed away in soap tablets.
“Mr Kalilo was apprehended at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka as he was coming from Benin via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian Airlines flight. A search of his luggage by Drug Enforcement Officers led to the discovery of 4.708 kilograms of heroin that was concealed in tablets of soap,”,he said.
In another event, Allan Muvundo, who escaped from DEC property in July, has been captured.
According to Mr. Khan, the suspect was chosen during an operation at a specific hotel.
He claimed Mr. Muvundo was discovered in possession of one cartridge of ammunition and 0.57 grams of cocaine.
A pistol and four rounds of ammunition were found at a residence in Kalingalinga, according to Mr. Khan, and another pistol and 17 rounds of ammunition were found in Mumbwa.
He claimed that Mr. Muvundo brandished one of the weapons as he from the DEC property and accidentally shot an onlooker in the arm.
“Mr Muvundo aged 29 of Kalundu in Lusaka has since been charged and arrested for; Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs, Disorderly Conduct at Drug Enforcement Commission Premises contrary to section 64 (k) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and Escaping from Lawful Custody contrary to section 119 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia,”he said.
He said police had instituted investigations in the shooting incident.
