Electricity Company in South Africa Increases Power Cuts

Eskom, the state-owned electricity company of South Africa, has announced an expansion of its program of scheduled power outages.

The supply will be stopped between 20:00 and 5:00 local time.

Shorter blackouts would thereafter be implemented until further notice, according to the business.

In an effort to address the problem, President Cyril Ramaphosa proclaimed a state of calamity last week.

Eskom has a network of outdated, poorly maintained coal-fired power plants and is rife with corruption.

Every day since the beginning of the year, there have been power outages in various sections of South Africa.
