Four Mansa police officers, including the chief, have been detained when it was discovered that they were guarding a truck transporting priceless minerals in disguise as manganese with weapons.
It is believed that the minerals that were carried were stolen.
The truck’s driver has also been taken into custody.
The four officers were armed with two AK-47 rifles as they escorted the Howo-sino tipper truck containing Sugllite, which was passed off as manganese, according to Central Province Police Commissioner David Chileshe, who confirmed the incident.
The four were intercepted at Luanshimba Security Checkpoint and are identified as inspector Jere Masauso aged 40 in Charge Mansa Police Station, Sergeant Mulenga Chilufya, Constable Mulongwe Sydney and Constable Chiwala Simon. Also apprehended is Felix Shoko aged 38 of unmarked house number, 10 Miles Chibombo District a driver from China Habour Limited,” he said.
Mr Chileshe said the officers together with the driver are detained at Kabwe Central Police awaiting court appearance.
