Government prioritises road network development in Northwestern province

Vice President Mutale Nalumango says government is prioritising development of the road network in North Western province because it is the new economic zone for Zambia. Ms Nalumango says government is looking into ensuring that the roads in the region are worked on to ease transportation of goods and services across Congo, Angola and Zambia, respectively.

She says that it is only prudent that roads such as the Kipushi road are worked on because they are economic roads that will boost trade between Zambia and Congo.

Speaking during a meeting with traditional leaders in Mushindamo district today, the Vice President added that the government is optimistic that developing the road network in Northwestern Province will also increase foreign trade.

“It’s not like we are favouring the people of North Western by working on these roads, no, we are not, we are looking at the bigger picture, because this is an economic province”, she said.

The vice President has also called for concerted efforts between government and traditional leaders to bring development to Mushindamo district. She said government is working on actualising decentralization by increasing CDF and allowing the locals have control over finances in their various communities.

“We feel encouraged as a government because we believe in decentralization and tangible development which is why we have the Consistency Development Fund,” she said.

And speaking on behalf of traditional leaders in Mushindamo district, Chief Musaka of the Lamba speaking people has commended government for upholding peace and democracy in the country.

“We would like to appreciate the peace we are experiencing in this government, as well as the many projects being implemented to help bring development closer to our communities.

Chief Musaka said traditional leaders in the district are happy with the free education policy and the recruitment of teachers and health workers especially in rural areas.

The traditional leaders have also appealed to government to embark on constructing houses for chiefs returners who he said need to live within the parameters of the palace area for them to execute their duties efficiently. He therefore advised government to include returners houses as they plan to construct palaces for chiefs.
