illegal miners arrested in Ndola

Two suspected manganese miners from Ndola who were discovered excavating in a residential area have been detained by police.

Boyd Mulenga, 31, and Robby Lukonde, 27, both from the Bwanamukubwa region, are well-known for having been discovered in the Lupili ward while engaged in illegal mining activities.

Since then, the two have been detained, and the truck they had rented for their business has been seized.

The two were detained following a report from the local councillor, according to Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba, who confirmed the development.

He claimed that between 20:30 and 23:30 on February 2nd, the incident took place.

“A truck and trailer registration number AJD 5219 and ARB 5923T loaded with the mineral has been impounded.The anti- robbery Ndola received a report of illegal mining activities from Lupili Ward Councilor Emmanuel Mulenga that there was a group of unknown people who were conducting illegal mining activities in a residential area without permission,” he said.

Police responded quickly to the location where two people were detained, Mr. Mweemba continued, and Henry Mupila, 41, of Mtendere East in Lusaka, who was driving the truck and trailer, had them seized and transferred to Masala police station.
