Over 100 arrested as Operation Maruda gets underway

More than 100 persons, mostly women, have been detained for immigration violations and idling and disorderly behavior.

This comes after an operation in which 105 individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 51, were captured in Mtendere Compound by a team of officers from the Zambia Police Service, Drug Enforcement Commission, and Department of Immigration.

A statement from the security wing claims that the officers descended on the Mtendere Compound around 21:00 and detained 105 suspects, nine of them were female.

“Among the suspects, 25 were picked for Immigration related offences comprising 11 Burundians, seven Tanzanians, four Congolese, two Zimbabweans and one Rwandese. One person was arrested for a drug related offence while 79 were apprehended for Idle and Disorderly,”reads the statement.

Every suspect is being held in police custody as they await formal charges.

The activities will continue in an effort to purge the City of criminal elements, according to the statement.

“Members of the public are called upon to cooperate with the officers and provide information which may be of help to the law enforcement agencies,” reads the statement in parts..
