Redundancy Notices Issued to More Than 1000 Miners

At Baluba Mine, Luanshya Copper Mines cancelled the contracts of three significant contractors, who then gave over 1000 Copperbelt miners termination notices.

According to SAUL SIMUJIKA, president of the National Union of Miners & Allied Workers, roughly 700 miners at JCHX, a significant contractor in Baluba, have received notifications of termination.

Mr. SIMUJIKA further said that by January 15th, 2023, 500 more workers for two contractors employed by Luanshya Copper Mine at Baluba Mine will also be losing their employment.

The NUMAW President questioned where Luanshya Copper Mine intended to locate its 500 direct employees at Baluba Mine while addressing at a meeting with the Mines Minister PAUL KABUSWE at Katilungu House in Kitwe.

According to WISDOM NGWIRA, president of the United Mine Workers Union of Zambia, several important contractors at the Mopani Copper Mines in Kitwe have also let go a number of employees since the mining behemoth hasn’t paid them.

Earlier, JOSEPH CHEWE, president of the Mine Workers Union of Zambia, begged the government to resume operations at the Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines.

However, Mr. KABUSWE reassured the unions that Baluba Mine will not be laying off any employees.

The management of Luanshya Copper Mines assured Mr. KABUSWE that no employee will be sacked from the Mine, he said at the meeting.
