A 19-year-old Kitwe man killed his 17-year-old niece, who was his sweetheart, in a crime of passion after learning that she was having an illicit relationship with another man.
Before drinking poison to end his life, Emmanuel Sonta brutally stabbed his grade six classmate Elizabeth Phiri, who was his lover.
According to Copperbelt commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba, the incident happened between 18:00 and 19:00 yesterday.
According to Mr. Mweemba, the suspect, who is believed to have killed himself, also suffered a deep cut on the stomach and the right side of the leg in addition to multiple injuries to his face, right hand, and left palm. The victim, Elizabeth, he said, suffered multiple injuries to her neck, face, right hand, and left palm.
“The scene of crime was visited by the police and the empty bottle of doom and a knife was found besides the body of Elizabeth. Brief facts of the matter are that the deceased Elizabeth is alleged to have had a secret affair with his uncle Emmanuel Sonta (also deceased) which annoyed the other boy who also had an affair with her who got wind of what was happening. In fear of the parents ,Emmanuel confronted her and it led to the killings. The two bodies are currently lying in Kitwe Teaching hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem,” he said.
