Several countries in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), led by Algeria, Russia and China, have affirmed the need for the Council to act in support of the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel.
Leading the effort, Algeria argues that the Court’s judgment that Israel takes all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide, including acts leading to the killing of Palestinians, and further takes steps to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, cannot be implemented without an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
The United States indicates that while it agreed that more needed to be done to expand humanitarian relief in Gaza, it does not believe the conditions to sustain a ceasefire currently exist.
South Africa’s envoy Mathu Joyini takes a firm posture in defending her government’s actions at the ICJ, expressing dismay that in the days since the Court’s decision, the Israeli government has continued what she called “illegal actions” in violation of the Court order.
SABC News understands that Algeria will introduce a draft resolution laying out language for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in support of the ICJ order, the absence of which Algiers argues will see the continued destruction of Palestinians as a people and the maiming of children among others.
Despite indications of support from several council members for such an action, the veto-wielding Washington envoy pours cold water on the prospects of its success, pointing rather to regional diplomatic efforts towards a new hostage deal that could see a durable pause in fighting.

William Manku, the father of Skeem Saam star Amanda Manku, allegedly hired hitmen to kill the actress’ mother and grandmother. Manku (53), Nonhlanhla Ngubo (42) and David Khoza (40) appeared at the Magatle Magistrates Court in Zebediela, Limpopo, on Tuesday for their bail applications.
During cross-examination, the investigation officer in the case said that she does not believe Manku – who is a police captain – and his girlfriend, Ngubo, should be granted bail. Ngubo also works for law enforcement as a police sergeant. Read more
