There are encouraging signs for South Africa ahead of the Athletics World Championships which take place in Hungary next month. Sprinter Akani Simbine was impressive in Sunday’s meet. He clocked 9.97 seconds to win the men’s 100-metre race in Poland.
Significantly, Simbine defeated in-form American Fred Kerley, who had been undefeated this year. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme completed the top three.
Wayde van Niekerk also showed impressive form in the men’s 400-metre race. The South African ace set a meeting record of 44.08 seconds.
Another South African, Zakithi Nene, finished fourth in 44.74 seconds. Hurdler Marione Fourie finished last in the women’s 100-metre final while Antonio Alkana failed to advance beyond the 110-metre hurdles heats.
