John Mukulama, a 31-year-old resident of Chibombo District in Zambia, has been accused by the Department of Immigration with harboring, conduct that facilitates trafficking, and aiding and abetting.

On December 9, 2022, immigration officers discovered Mukulama at a nearly finished home in 12 Miles, where they also discovered eight Ethiopians and six Somalis.

The owner of the home, who had rented it to a woman from Zambia only known as Mrs. Doreen Mwanza, called the police after discovering the foreign nationals there, according to immigration public relations officer Namati Nshinka.

Mr. Nshinka claimed the owner of the home was alarmed when the caretaker, Mr. Mukulama, forbade her entry, causing her to peer in through the window.

“At that point, she saw the foreign nationals and immediately informed Immigration Officers, who rushed to the scene,” he said.

The eight Ethiopians and the six Somalis are at Mwembeshi Correctional Facility pending additional immigration procedures, according to Mr. Nshinka, who also stated that Mr. Mukulama is now being held pending a court appearance.

Mrs. Doreen Mwanza, he claimed, is still at large.

“We wish to warn perpetrators of transnational organized crimes such as human trafficking and smuggling to desist from these grave crimes as they will be arrested. The Department is determined and shall continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies to bring perpetrators to book,” Mr Nshinka said.
