According to ZESCO Limited, it is putting together solar power facilities across the nation to generate 800 megawatts of electricity.
This is in accordance with President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s order for the electricity utility firm to pursue alternative sources of energy, according to ZESCO National Spokesperson HENRY KAPATA.
According to Mr. KAPATA, ZESCO alone will build a solar power plant with a capacity of 250 megawatts, and any other independent power producer will be able to complete the remaining 250 megawatts.
According to him, ZESCO Limited has recognized that some areas are favorable for solar project development, particularly in drought-prone parts of the Southern, Luapula, and Western Provinces.
And according to Mr. KAPATA, the business is also considering installing 500 megawatts of wind energy in areas that are suited for the project.
He continues by saying that two projects will soon be put into action to help ease the country’s current hydropower generation challenges.
According to Mr. KAPATA, a 1200 megawatt project is being investigated on the Luapula River in collaboration with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and a 2400 megawatt hydroelectric station would be built in Southern Province in partnership with Zimbabwe.
