The legendary South African actress and filmmaker Connie Chiume has passed away at the age of 72. Her family shared the news in a heartfelt Instagram post on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the statement, the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress, known for her role in Black Panther, died on Tuesday at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg. Chiume was celebrated for her performances in local productions such as Rhythm City, Gomora, and Blessers. She gained notable recognition for her portrayal of Mam Sonto, a prominent drug dealer in Alexandra, on Mzansi Magic’s Gomora. At the time of her passing, she was nominated for an Outstanding Actress award at the Royal Soap Awards for her role as Sonto.
The family’s statement on her verified Instagram account read, “The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume.” The cause of her death has not been disclosed.
