Chishimba Kambwili, a Patriotic Front (PF) presidential candidate who has been outspoken, has been detained and accused with unlawful assembly.
Charles Kakula, who organized a protest march to Mr. Kambwili’s home on January 26 of this year, and he have both been prosecuted jointly.
The PF presidential candidate went to the police this morning after being called.
PF member and presidential candidate Emmanuel Mwamba was with Mr. Kambwili.
Additionally, Mr. Kambwili informed the media prior to his detention that police had surrounded his property around 5:00 in the morning.
“They wanted to create a scenario that I am a fugitive who wanted to run away from police. But my lawyer and I wrote to police that I will avail myself on Monday and here I am,” he said.
Mr. Kambwili has been detained for the offense of Unlawful Assembly in violation of Sections 74 and 75 of the Penal Code, according to Police Deputy Spokesperson Danny Mwale. This offense is found in Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
“He has been jointly charged with Charles Kakula who is already in Police custody facing the same offence.It is alleged that the two whilst acting together with other unknown persons did Unlawfully assemble causing other persons to reasonably fear for the breach of public peace,” he said.
