According to the Zambia Council for Social Development, the end of the death penalty is timely because Zambia will be evaluated at the Geneva-based Center for Civil and Political Rights (CCPR).
Zambia’s vow to the UN to abolish the death sentence has been fulfilled, according to Council Acting Executive Director ZEBBIES MUMBA.
The elimination of the death sentence will send a positive message during the peer review, Mr. MUMBA adds.
The death penalty’s elimination has been a long-standing issue, according to Mr. MUMBA, and his association is happy that it has finally been done away with.
The Penal Code Amendment Bill Number 25 of 2022, which eliminated the death penalty and deleted the crime of criminal defamation of the president, received the president’s assent last week.
