People of Livingstone left in dark by vandals’ theft

Around 600 homes were left in the dark this morning when unknown individuals cut and stole ZESCO wires in Livingstone’s Burton settlement.

In an interview with ZNBC television, Mwalibonena Ward Councillor JULIET HAMBIZYI stated that she started receiving calls from impacted residents at around 7:00 a.m. and that when she arrived on the scene, she discovered that cables had been cut close to a transformer.

Ms. HAMBIZYI has encouraged ZESCO to carry out extensive community sensitization campaigns so that locals may swiftly report when such an incident occurs.

Residents can only contribute to the protection of ZESCO facilities, she claims, decreasing vandalism, through widespread sensitization.

And FAITH NJOVU, a nearby resident, told ZNBC news that this is the second time in a year that vandals have targeted the transformer.

Ms. NJOVU claims that she heard her dog barking between three and four in the morning and believes that is when the cables were taken.

The tourism capital of Livingstone has experienced a wave of vandalism, and ZESCO has been pushing customers to report power outages that occur between 22:00 and 05:00 hours as that is when most vandalism occurs.
