Public Prosecutor will open five offices

To examine the welfare and protection of vulnerable people, especially those with various disabilities, the Office of the Public Protector will shortly operate offices in five Provinces.

The offices, according to Public Protector CAROLINE SOKONI, would be user-friendly and accessible to those with impairments.

During the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the office of the Public Protector and Disability Rights Watch, Ms. SOKONI made this statement.

The MOU aims to strengthen case referral systems to aid in the capacity building for the well-being of people with disabilities, as well as to promote and protect the rights of people with disabilities.

Nearly 2 million Zambians, or about 10% of the population, have some sort of impairment, according to Disability Rights Watch Board Chairperson JOSEPH MUSANJE.

This was stated by Mr. MUSANJE in a speech made on his behalf by Vice Chairperson of Disability Rights Watch Board GRACE NKUWA.

With the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. MUNSANJE expressed his joy at Zambia’s significant efforts to advance the rights of people with disabilities.

The director of Disability Rights Watch who serves as the board chair, WAMUNDILA WALIUA, says he hopes the MOU would support people with mental and intellectual disabilities in terms of their capacity for making decisions legally and otherwise.
