The Earthshot Prize’s annual awards presentation, which will be taped on December 2 at the MGM Music Hall in Boston, will be broadcast by THE MultiChoice Group, an official African media broadcast partner.

In addition to actor, producer, and director Daniel Dae Kim, the awards will once again be co-hosted by award-winning broadcaster, podcaster, and television host Clara Amfo. The Princess of Wales, Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek, actress, screenwriter, and comedian Catherine O’Hara, and actor and activist Shailene Woodley are among the presenters who will name the five winners of The Earthshot Prize. Each winning answer will get £1 million in prize money to assist and scale their technologies, which have the potential to help the environment.

Sir David Attenborough, a natural historian and member of The Earthshot Prize Council, will also be present at the ceremony, along with Cate Blanchett, an actor, producer, and member of The Earthshot Prize Council. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Prince of Wales will make some remarks.

The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish will perform at this year’s ceremony with her brother and creative partner, FINNEAS, as well as the platinum-selling musician and campaigner Ellie Goulding and singer-songwriter and activist Annie Lennox.

Each winning answer will get £1 million in prize money to assist and scale their technologies, which have the potential to help the environment.

MultiChoice Group Executive Chairman Imtiaz Patel said, “MultiChoice’s vast footprint on the continent – reaching 22.1 million households across 50 nations – will ensure that Africans have front seat viewing of one of the most significant climate change projects of our time.

In addition to educating communities about climate change through the partnership, the African entertainment company hopes to spur other businesses to join the fight against it, inspire innovators to present their solutions, and persuade governments to make it a top priority on their national agendas.

This year’s contenders from Africa include Filip Lövström, CEO and co-creator of ROAM, an electric car manufacturer also based in Kenya, and Charlot Magayi, the founder of Mukuru Clean Stoves in Kenya.

Charlot sold charcoal as fuel while growing up in Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s biggest slums. She and her neighbors frequently suffered respiratory ailments as a result of the charcoal. Then, in 2012, a charcoal burner severely burned her daughter. In 2017, Charlot established Mukuru Clean Stoves in search of a better answer.

As a research project at a Swedish university, ROAM was established in 2017 when Filip recognized an opportunity: the sale of electric vehicles built in Africa specifically for the African market. In Kenya, motorbike taxis are the most convenient and affordable form of transportation, but the ubiquitous Boda Bodas are significant polluters. These motorcycles are some of the ones on the market with the greatest CO2 emissions. Most Kenyans cannot afford these options because they are either unreliable, of poor quality, or both.

Prince William established the global environmental prize in 2020, and the following year, Sanergy from Kenya, Reeddi Capsules from Nigeria, and Pole Pole Foundation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo were chosen as finalists.

The Earthshot Prize is an ambitious global environmental prize that aims to find and scale the best solutions to aid in the repair of our planet within the remaining years of this decade. It was inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s “Moonshot” challenge, which helped pioneer space travel in the 1960s.

The five “Earthshot” aims of Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build A Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate will be addressed by The Earthshot Prize each year. Winners and finalists will gain access to a global support network to grow their work, and these winning ideas will have the biggest impact on the biggest environmental concerns confronting our planet.

On Monday, December 5th, MultiChoice channels in Africa will broadcast the award ceremony:

Family of Africa Magic (17:00 WAT)

• A Zed (18:00 CAT)

African Newsroom (21:00 CAT)

East Maisha Magic (17:00 EAT)
