Bank employees in Nigeria use ladder to escape protesters

The BBC’s Disinformation Unit has discovered that a widely circulated video showing employees at a Nigerian bank using a ladder to climb over a security wall to flee angry customers is real.

Customers at Zenith Bank in Warri, Delta state, had harassed the employees since they couldn’t get money from ATMs.

The issue began after they notified clients that they were out of new naira notes, a staff member who preferred to remain anonymous told the BBC.

As Nigerians try to exchange their old banknotes for new ones before the 10 February deadline, which was extended from the 31 January deadline, there have been lengthy lines outside banks in recent weeks.

A restriction has been imposed by many banks due to the shortfall, much to the chagrin of customers.
