A proposed sponsorship contract between South African MPs and Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur has been canceled after details were leaked to the media and caused a public uproar.

The proposed three-year arrangement worth 900 million South African rand ($52.5 million; £42.5 million) had received preliminary approval from the nation’s official tourism authority.

However, detractors claimed that the money might be used more effectively in a nation where there are frequent power outages, water shortages, and high unemployment.

The tourism committee of parliament demanded that the arrangement be scrapped immediately on Tuesday.

This came after it was informed that the intended contract was unknown to Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu.

“This bargain expires right here, right now. Because everything about the contract itself is flawed. The committee’s chair, Thandi Mahambehlala, demanded a probe into this problem immediately.

Additionally, it was decided that the board’s interim chief financial officer would be fired right away due to an alleged conflict of interest and an erroneous appointment.
