Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo says the government has intensified a nationwide soil analysis campaign aimed at promoting proper lime application and improving crop yields across the country.
Speaking at the Corteva Agriscience National Field Day and the launch of the new maize variety P3531W in Chipata District, Eastern Province, Mr. Mtolo said the initiative is a direct response to growing concerns over declining soil fertility in many farming areas. He stressed that without understanding the specific needs of their soils, many farmers continue to apply fertilisers incorrectly, leading to poor harvests, higher input costs, and reduced profitability.
The minister highlighted that soil acidity has emerged as a major barrier to achieving optimal agricultural productivity, particularly in regions where lime application practices have not been adopted. He emphasised that reversing this trend through targeted soil management is crucial for the country’s food security and economic growth.
Mr. Mtolo called on all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to support soil health initiatives, noting that building awareness among farmers about the importance of soil testing and appropriate lime usage could significantly transform crop outcomes.

Meanwhile, Corteva Agriscience Managing Director Samson Nyendwa pledged his company’s commitment to partnering with the government to help achieve Zambia’s ambitious target of 10 million metric tonnes of maize production by the year 2027. Mr. Nyendwa said that innovation, improved seed varieties, and robust agronomic support would be key pillars in reaching this goal.
The government’s soil health campaign is expected to include extensive farmer education programs, subsidised soil testing services, and greater access to lime products as part of broader efforts to enhance sustainable agriculture.
