Zambia opposition arrests have drawn international attention following a security operation that unfolded during the country’s tense general election.

The United Nations human rights chief has expressed concern after authorities arrested 11 opposition-linked figures on the night of the 13 August 2026 election.

The arrests followed an armed operation at a Lusaka residence where presidential candidate Brian Mundubile was present. Gunfire erupted during the raid, although the government and opposition have offered sharply different accounts.

Authorities claim officers discovered high-grade military weapons and prevented a planned threat against national security.

However, Mundubile denies that the people inside the property were armed. He has described the operation as a politically motivated attack against members of the opposition.

UN demands due process for detained officials

The United Nations has called on Zambian authorities to ensure that every arrest complies with international human rights standards.

It also wants the detainees brought before the courts without unnecessary delays. Moreover, they must receive access to lawyers and their families.

The intervention has placed Zambia’s post-election events under a brighter international spotlight.

For the families involved, the story is not simply about political parties or competing statements. They are waiting to learn where their loved ones are being held, what charges they face and when they will appear before a judge.

The government has named six of the detained people. They include Tonse Alliance presidential spokesperson George Chisanga and several senior opposition figures.

Authorities accuse the group of possessing military-grade weapons and preparing an armed insurrection. However, the opposition has rejected those accusations and demanded an independent investigation.

Mundubile says he feared for his life

Mundubile said the security operation placed his life in danger.

The NRPUP presidential candidate was not listed among those arrested. However, he has reportedly moved to a protected location because of concerns about his safety.

His party has also called for information about people who disappeared following the operation.

Meanwhile, former Lunte MP Mutotwe Kafwaya became the centre of a separate search after his family said it could not establish his location.

His wife has since approached the High Court, seeking an order requiring authorities to produce him and explain the legal basis for his detention.

These developments have deepened fears that Zambia’s election dispute could move beyond the ballot box and become a wider human rights crisis.

Election already marked by violence

Voting across much of Zambia proceeded peacefully. Nevertheless, several violent incidents disrupted the counting process.

Election officials came under attack in some areas, while marked ballot papers were stolen. As a result, the Electoral Commission of Zambia temporarily suspended counting and the announcement of results.

Security forces were deployed, and counting later resumed after officials received assurances that the situation had stabilised.

A political party official was also killed during the election period. Nine suspects were arrested in connection with attacks affecting the voting process.

The European Union Election Observation Mission described election day as generally peaceful. However, it raised concerns about unequal campaign conditions, legal uncertainty and unbalanced state media coverage.

Hichilema wins as opposition prepares court fight

The Electoral Commission declared Hakainde Hichilema the winner of the presidential election.

He received 2,965,326 votes, while Mundubile secured 1,856,217. The result gave Hichilema a second five-year mandate.

However, Mundubile has rejected the outcome and announced plans to petition the results in court.

Therefore, the country now faces two connected battles. One concerns the credibility of the election results, while the other focuses on the rights and safety of detained opposition figures.

Hichilema has promised to serve every Zambian and called for unity. He has also warned against armed groups threatening national security.

Still, those promises will face close scrutiny while questions remain about the arrests.

Zambia has long enjoyed a reputation as one of Southern Africa’s more stable democracies. The way authorities handle the detainees could now shape how citizens and international partners view the country’s democratic record.

Families are demanding access. Opposition leaders want answers. Meanwhile, the UN is watching.

The election may be over, but Zambia’s most difficult political test could only be beginning.
